History and Mission

CFL’s mission is to unleash the power of literacy to improve lives. Through a wide range of literacy services, including reading, writing, math, life, technology, and work skills, CFL helps a diverse population of learners meet their needs and achieve their personal and employment-related goals.

Born as a volunteer tutoring program in 1968, CFL provides classes in Adult Education that serve as a pipeline to prepare for the high school equivalency tests, comprehensive family literacy programming, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, and small group and one-on-one tutoring.

CFL is a leader in the field of Adult Education. Under our new models of instruction, CFL’s students are more apt to acquire and retain jobs, progress to postsecondary education and training, lift themselves out of poverty, and take better care of their families.

We are a myPLACEsm  campus, which is a major initiative under the Office of Adult Education, City of Philadelphia, serving as a one-stop shop providing a single point of entry for adults seeking basic academic skills remediation, English Language Acquisition training, secondary school credential preparation, workforce and college preparation, and digital literacy.

We integrate blended learning (using both online and in-person learning experiences when teaching students) into all Adult Education and High School Equivalency Prep classes. Though there are many literacy programs that use technology for “add on” support, very few integrate it as a key piece of classroom learning.
